Estos filmes (como Frida, naturaleza viva, Xica Da Silva, Historia Oficial, Se permuta, Tristana, por citar algunos), no sólo han sido seleccionados por el Dr. Antonio Cárdenas Contreras, sino también por prestigiadas instituciones de educación superior que las incluyen como materias de estudio. Los escogen debido a sus técnicas fílmicas innovadoras, por sus temáticas y enfoques nunca antes tratados y porque facilitan el desarrollo lingüístico, artístico y cultural de los estudiantes—y del espectador en general. Por supuesto, estos ensayos son claves también por la forma en que están escritos: no sólo hacen apreciaciones de tipo estético, de la estructura en sí, a la manera de los críticos de cine comerciales, sino que contextualizan las películas en la sociedad que las produce o las observa. Antonio Cárdenas Contreras es originario de Jalisco, México pero creció en la cultura de frontera-actualmente radica en Phoenix, Arizona. Doctor en letras hispanas por la Arizona State University, ha sido Director del Departamento de Español en Mesa Community College donde también se desempeña como maestro de lengua y literatura hispana. Experto en literatura fronteriza, es autor de textos académicos y culturales publicados en medios hispanos de la región así como del ensayo, primero en abordar el análisis bicultural o ¨bibordeland¨ en su investigación titulada: "Mar, desierto y ladrillo: hacia una dialéctica de la liberación de la frontera en Guillermo Munro y Miguel Méndez".
