Todos saben que el oficio periodístico significa resistencia y muchas veces arriesgar la propia vida. Estamos en uno de los países más peligrosos para ejercer el periodismo, no sólo por el acecho de los criminales, sino porque el poder corruptor de éstos ha convertido a policías y funcionarios del gobierno en sus aliados.
Aun así, cada reportero, desde su trinchera, levanta la voz para exponer la degradación institucional, la ineficacia de las autoridades, la violación de los derechos humanos, la corrupción, la impunidad, la violencia. Y en el centro de su escritura están las víctimas, la necesidad de contar sus historias, la necesidad de no olvidar.

Mexico’s most important reporters give a voice to the people’s protests in one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. This book compiles work from several of Mexico’s most important journalists: Juan Villoro, Lydia Cacho, Marcela Turati, Sergio González Rodríguez, Anabel Hernández, Diego Enrique Osorno, and Emiliano Ruiz Parra.
With a prologue by Elena Poniatowska and an introduction by Felipe Restrepo Pombo, this is an indispensable, heart-rending denunciation of the situation in Mexico that reveals how much the tragedy concerns all of us. Despite the danger to their own lives, each reporter, from their trenches, raises their voice to expose institutional deterioration, the inefficiency of authorities, the violation of human rights, corruption, impunity, and violence. And at the center of their writing are the victims, the necessity to tell their stories, the need to not forget.

El testigo (2004), es reconocido como uno de los principales escritores latinoamericanos contemporáneos.
Lydia Cacho (Ciudad de México, 1963). Periodista, escritora y defensora de los derechos humanos, es autora de doce libros traducidos a nueve idiomas y en venta en más de veinte países. Ha sido reconocida con algunos de los premios más importantes del mundo en materia de periodismo y derechos humanos.
Marcela Turati (Ciudad de México, 1974). Fundadora de la Red Periodistas de a Pie y colaboradora en la revista Proceso, ha recibido varios galardones internacionales, entre los que destaca el Premio de Excelencia de la Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI), el Premio Wola de Derechos Humanos y el premio a la conciencia e integridad en el periodismo de la Fundación Nieman, Universidad de Harvard.
Sergio González Rodriguez (Ciudad de México, 1950). Es conocido por su escalofriante reportaje sobre las mujeres asesinadas en Ciudad Juárez,Huesos en el desierto. Premio Anagrama de Ensayo 2014 y autor de Los 43 de Iguala, sobre la matanza de Ayotzinapa, ha sido galardonado con el Premio Casa América Catalunya a la Libertad de Expresión en Iberoamérica.
Anabel Hernández (Ciudad de México, 1971). Ganadora del Premio Nacional de Periodismo de México, en 2003 Unicef le dio un reconocimiento por una serie de reportajes sobre la esclavitud sexual infantil en Estados Unidos y en 2012 la Asociación Mundial de Periódicos y Editores de Noticias le otorgó el Premio Pluma de Oro de la Libertad.
Diego Enrique Osorno (Monterrey, 1980). Testigo y narrador de los principales conflictos del primer cuarto del siglo XXI en México y otros países, es uno de los nuevos cronistas de Indias según la Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI). Participó en la Comisión de la Verdad de Oaxaca, que investigó y consignó a funcionarios por ejecuciones extrajudiciales y actos de tortura. Cofundador de agenciabengala.com.
Emiliano Ruiz Parra (Ciudad de México, 1982). Formado como reportero en el periódico Reforma (2004-2008), sus crónicas han sido incluidas en diversas antologías. En 2010 fue nominado al premio de la Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano por su crónica "Morir por Pemex". Desde 2011 es colaborador habitual de la revista Gatopardo.
